Dear Friends,
1. ELCG CONVENTION: Keep the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Guyana in your
prayers next week (May 7-10) as we believe that the annual convention of the
church will be held then. Among the important matters will be election of a
new President of the church as Pastor Inshanally, who was elected a year ago,
resigned in mid-term.
2. ASCENSION PARISH: We are attaching a really marvelous Newsletter from
Pastor Richard Young about Ascension Parish. He really has his hands full and
is doing a magnificent job. We are pleased that Faith Lutheran Church, East
Hartford, Connecticut sent $3,000 through GMN to make possible the new zinc
roof on the Ascension church building. You will also read that Fellowship
Lutheran. Tulsa, Oklahoma, send a construction team to do some major work on
the Mount Zion, Sand Hills, Demerara River building. Our thanks to these
greatr partners.
We hope that you will be able to access the somewhat large file which Pastor
Young has sent. If you cannot, let me know and I can try to send it in two
parts.
3. CRICKET WORLD CUP: you have probably heard that part of the Cricket
World Cup was held at new facilities built for that purpose at Providence,
East Bank. That was an exciting time for the church.
4. CONCORDIA COLLEGE GRADUATES: April 28 was an exciting time for Daniel
Persaud and Michael Orilall who graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead,
Minnesota. They graduated with degrees in business and accounting and already
have jobs in Minneapolis! Congratulations to them.
5. REDEEMER CAMPBELLVILLE: We recently received the annual report from
Redeemer Lutheran Church. The congregation is strong and doing well in spite
of the fact that there is no full-time pastor. Pastor Stephen Nahar is acting
pastor while serving full time at St. Andrew's Parish, East Coast Demerara.
Their average weekly worship attendance last year was 112. Elaine Grannum
completed many years as Congregation Vice-President, doing so very ably and
faithfully. Joycelyn Rickford was elected the new Vice-President.
Six Redeemer members have been enrolled in the Lutheran Lay Academy Programme.
The congregation has received gifts from individuals and churches outside of
Guyana including US$200 from St. Paul-Reformation Lutheran, St. Paul,
Minnesota to assist with the Christmas hampers and program for needy people in
the community.
6. PASTOR WILLARD & MARY HAGER: The Hagers, who served St. Matthew Parish
some years back, have been serving in Clintonville, Wisconsin. They made a
return visit to Guyana in June and carried with them 40 bibles from the Guyana
Mission Network along with a set of spiral-bound music books of Caribbean
hymns the words of which are in the ELCG hymnal. Many of the songs are not so
well known and each parish will get a copy of the music which will make it
easier for music leaders to lead the congregation in singing. Our thanks to
the Hagers for taking these and other things to Guyana.
7. THE REV. DR. WINSTON PERSAUD: We are pleased to say that the Rev. Dr.
Winston Persaud, professor of systematic theology, Wartburg Lutheran Seminary,
Dubuque, Iowa, recently presented a paper on a "Summary of Round VIII on How
We Understand Prayer for Other People" for the U.S. Lutheran-Roman Catholic
Dialogue
in Round XI which met March 15-18 at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary,
Columbia, S.C., for its fourth meeting to discuss "The Hope of Eternal Life."
8. CONTRIBUTIONS ARE WELCOME: We encourage persons to make contributions
to the Guyana Mission Network. You will notice suggestions from Pastor Young
about needs in the Ascension Parish. Other parishes need help as well. If you
wish to designate gifts to certain parishes we will pass it on that way.
General, undesignated gifts are used for GMN projects including Bibles and
other needs. Note that you can send gifts payable to the Guyana Mission
Network c/o Pastor Paul Tidemann's address below. The gifts are given through
St. Paul-Reformation Lutheran Church, St. Paul, Minnesota and are tax
deductible.
