FROM:  PASTOR ERROL INSHANALLY – PRESIDENT OF THE E.L.C.G.

TO:     ALL PASTORS, DEACONS/DEACONESS, PARISH AND `

CHURCH COUNCILS OF THE E.L.C.G.

SUBJECT:   NEWS CAPSULES IV FROM THE E.L.C.G.

Dear Fellow Co- Workers,

IN NOMINE JESU!!!

Recently I came across a SHAKESPEARAN quote taken from KING LEAR used by author MALCOLM MUGGERIDGE in his book “A THIRD TESTAMENT”.  This is the quote:  “No, no, no! Come, let’s away to prison.  We two alone will sing like birds i’ the cage ……. and take upon’s the mystery of things as if we were God’s spies”.

The book just cited provides lovely portraits of outstanding giants of old, like ST AUGUSTINE and PASCAL and KIERREGAARD up to BONHOEFFER in our time who served as “God’s spies”, posted in actual or potential enemy – occupied territory, the enemy, if come, in this particular case, the devil

Using the language of espionage in a metaphorical sense of course, NEWS CAPSULES goes “undercover” to track down the news making the round.

However, for the bereaving families mourning their loved ones mentioned in this issue, we extend our heartfelt condolences on behalf of the entire E.L.C.G. Our prayers are with you at this difficult time of loss and sorrow.

 (1).       A TIME FOR EVERYTHING….. A TIME TO UNROOF………

The Resurrection Congregation at No. 7 Village on the West Coast of Berbice is happy to report it has replaced the Church roof!!!  This has become necessary in our time because the former roof contained the deadly asbestos material which is referred to as a cancer-forming substance.

Church Treasurer – Ada Rohan, is excited that this project brought the members closer in their efforts to raise the entire cost of some $320,000.00.

We congratulate Pastor Burchell Moriah and the courageous folks at Resurrection Church!!!!

 (2).       PREACH YOUR HEART OUT:

A morning session, more like a workshop, was conducted at the Lutheran Lay Academy in New Amsterdam that saw some twelve (12) lay persons learning what it means to Preach Your Heart Out.  This homiletic task held on Saturday, October 18th and led by Pastor Errol Inshanally provided a “preaching–friendly” atmosphere whereby participants talked about their joys and fears of preaching, using their personal experiences.  Also a criteria for evaluating a sermon was looked at, with reference to faithfulness to the Lutheran Confessions, faithfulness to the text and faithfulness to the Congregation.

(3).      REFORMATION CELEBRATION MARKED REVIVAL SERVICES:

St Andrew Parish on the East Coast of Demerara chose to mark the month of the Reformation by holding revival services at St Andrew Lutheran Church from 0ctober 19th - 24th, 2008.  Pastor Stephen Nahar, the pastor of the Parish, was one of several speakers who shared around the theme: “RENEWING OUR COMMITMENT TO CHRIST’.  The other Speakers included Pastor Burchell Moriah of Good Shepherd Parish, Deacon Sugrim Gobin, Lay leaders: Michael Davy Ram, and Shelda Emanuel.

All the Speakers made use of Martin Luther’s life experiences to challenge the Congregation to walk in faithful living to Christ!!!!

(4).       GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH SOON TO GET A VEHICLE:

Good Shepherd Parish has yet another reason to give thanks to the Lord!!!  This is because a special Car Fund to the amount of $800,000.00 is now being to the Parish.  This Car Fund was originally set up by FELLOWSHIP LUTHERAN CHURCH in OKLAHOMA and was handed over to the E.L.C.G for a number of years now.

In the meantime, Pastor Burchell Moriah has been taking driving lessons and is eager to get behind the wheels in the Parish Car.  This will help Pastor Moriah tremendously in getting around his four (4) Congregations!!!

 Safe driving Pastor Moriah!!!

        (5).      FORT NASSAU :

In Guyana, Fort Nassau is recognized as the birthplace of the Ebenezer Lutheran Church.  This October
as Ebenezer celebrates their 265th Anniversary, we welcome an article in the weekend Mirror Newspaper (11th – 12th October, 2008) on Fort Nassau as a Historic Monument of Guyana.  Here are some excerpts from that article:- “FORT NASSAU was constructed in the Eastern Bank of the Berbice River, sixty(60) miles up from New Amsterdam in 1627 by ABRAHAM VAN PERE, a Dutch Merchant.  It was the seat of Government in Berbice which was then governed as a separate colony.  The Fort was constructed with wood and enclosed with palisades.  The barracks were built to house sixty (60) soldiers.  In 1712 it was demolished and subsequently a new fort was constructed.  In 1763, Governor Van Hoogenheim and his soldiers prevented the slave rebels from acquiring it by blowing it up”.

(6).      DEMERARA DISTRICT OF THE NATIONAL YOUTH COMMISSION NAMES ITS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE:

The National Youth Commission is made up of the Demerara and Berbice Districts.  NEWS CAPSULES V is pleased to bring to your attention the names of those who were elected on the 4th October, 2008 to serve the Demerara District of the National Youth Commission.  Drawn from the Parishes of St Andrew, St Matthew, Calvary, Redeemer and Ascension the following Youths now serve in leadership roles:

 The elected Officers are:
President                                Anil Dass

Vice-President                       Suzette Rickford

Secretary                               Dynutha Adonis

Treasurer                               Keishana Morris

(7).       REFORMATION SERVICE WITH DRUMS AND TAMBOURINES:

ADVENT PARISH celebrated the Reformation with one combined Service for its four (4) Congregations on Sunday - October 26th, 2008 at CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH on the West Coast of Berbice.  The Service was certainly a joyful one as singing was accompanied by drums and tambourines!!!  The Guest Preacher was Pastor Errol Inshanally.  A sacred concert after lunch and chaired by Pastor Leroy Nicholson was a time for the Congregations to offer their best talents in singing and narrative speaking.  Around one hundred and twenty (120) persons were in attendance.  Shouts of “ENCORE” and “BRAVO” were heard regularly!!!!

(8).       YOUTH CAMP REUNION IN THE AIR:

The last weekend in November (28th – 30th) promises to be a block – buster one for the Youths who will be heading for St. John Lutheran Parish on the Corentyne for their CAMP REUNION.  This end-of-year gathering is usually the best National Youth event for the year and excitement is around that Camp REUNION will draw a large turn-out.  The theme for the weekend is “YOUTHS LIGHT THE PATH FOR A BETTER FUTURE” and a servant project at a local Orphanage on the Corentyne forms part of the activities.  Youths put this date down for a great week-end.   C & B there!!!!!

(9).      IN MEMORIAM:

The entire Lutheran Family in Guyana mourns the loss of two of its members at this time.  Indranie Motiram, a member of Emmanuel Congregation was one of the six (6) victims who perished in the Corentyne River on October 24th, 2008, when the small boat they were traveling in capsized after the engine propeller was caught in a fishing seine.  She was laid to rest after funeral service was held in Emmanuel Congregation.

Also, Chandranie Monica Ramjass, a champion of the Faith at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, passed away on the 29th October, 2008.  At the time of her demise, she was the Treasurer of Ebenezer Parish and served with distinction in many Parishes and National Committees.  Her death is a sad blow to us at this time.

Funeral Service was conducted at Ebenezer by the Vice-President of the Parish - Dyanand Mohandatt and Pastor Errol Inshanally who brought the message.

MAY THEIR SOULS REST IN PEACE
